I have loved art and creating since childhood. The advice to me when leaving school and embarking on a career was ‘There’s no way you’ll earn a living from being an artist.’ So I studied and qualified as a Veterinary Nurse instead and gave up my creative dream. That is until 13 years ago.
My children had reached an age when they were more self-sufficient, and art came back to me in the form of stone sculpture. I started on a local course and after a few years took my own path. So no formal qualification to speak of in art, just determination, imagination and a need to express my love of animals, nature and my Cornish heritage. I love the 3D challenge of working in stone. It’s not just nice to look at either, it’s so tactile. Try running your hands over it and feel the textures! Stone is such a timeless and spiritual medium. In addition to stone carving, I have recently embarked on some stained-glass courses in hope of combining the beauty of stone and glass together. So far this has proved popular, and I continue to develop as a sculptor and glass artist. I work mainly in re-claimed limestone and soapstone. The limestone pieces are suitable for outside. Soapstone is more suited to indoors. For my full story and gallery please visit my website www.sharonrichsculpture.co.uk |
