My lifelong interest in textiles has inspired the language of my ceramic work. I work in porcelain paper clay which is a combination of up to 50% paper pulp and porcelain slip. The resulting clay body has greater elasticity which allows me to create structures that interpret the texture and properties of cloth itself; its wrinkles, folds, creases, and pleats using oxides with clear glaze as colour.
As an artist I do not work from a design or drawing; the pots take shape under my hands. My making is a collaboration between the clay and myself in which the clay always asserts its independence. Email: janetcross47hotmail.co.uk |
