Charlotte James

​Charlotte James is an artist and illustrator based in Oxfordshire.

Charlotte James is an artist and illustrator based in Oxfordshire. She graduated with a
BA in Fine Art from Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2003. More recently (2017) she
completed an MA in Children’s book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art and one of
her book projects, The Diver,’ was recently long-listed for the dPictus International
Unpublished Picturebook Showcase.
Whilst studying Children’s Book illustration, she also became interested in observational
drawing, particularly in capturing light at different times of day. This interest has led most
recently to a series of oil paintings based on local residential and urban scenes at night.
She is drawn to the way light and colour can transform an otherwise mundane scene into
something more atmospheric and intriguing. Her painting, ‘Bus Stop,’ was selected for
the Ironstone Prize exhibition 2024 at Banbury Museum. She has a range of influences
including illustrators such as Jon Klassen and Sydney Smith and artists such as Edward
Hopper, George Shaw and the art of the ‘East London School.’
