Capturing the Essence
21 September - 21 October
Paintings by Michele Tallack and Sculptures by Martin Smith
Michele Tallack (left) & Martin Smith (right)
Working in two very different types of media, Michele Tallack and Martin Smith successfully capture the essence of people, landscape, light, and shadow respectively in their work with Michele revealing the impact of culture on environment in her paintings and Martin revealing the nature of stone in his carvings.
About Michele
Michele Tallack
This exhibition covers two aspects of Michele’s work: paintings done in England focusing on London, her birthplace, and canvases produced in Collioure, in southwest France. Wherever she paints, her work has as its theme the impact that people have on their environment and the ways in which this environment shapes their life. The marks people have made on the landscape and the ways in which urban or rural landscapes have affected how they live and work has always been her main topic. The music that accompanies this exhibition is Catalan sardanes music. These dances, banned by Franco, are a crucial part of the life of the region. They are democratic, danced in the open air in a circle. In the past peasants and lords danced together to express solidarity and equality as Catalans. Danced today, they are dear to the hearts of the Catalan peoples of the region as symbols of resistance and continuity, with all generations dancing together. |
About Martin
Martin Smith
Working in stone, a sculptor is inevitably aware of the long tradition of using material dating from prehistoric times, and particularly since the Egyptian and Classical eras. While there is no conscious imitation of historic styles, the calm persistence of stone informs Martin’s sculptures. Martin works in both figurative and abstract idioms, the abstract often drawing on organic elements. For him the great attraction of stone is the variety of colour and texture, allowing a great range of expression. Among other things, a sculpture is a device for capturing light and shadow. Because of this Martin pays a deal of attention to line and surface, often working to a high finish. Martin studied stone carved on short courses at Centro d’Arte Verrocchio (Casole d’Elsa), Arco Arte (Carrara) and West Dean College. He has also studied bronze casting, but currently his main medium is stone. He works as a professional artist, in the last year selling mainly through the Stour Gallery and an exhibition at Art Jericho, Oxford, and this year in two shows in Summertown and Headington, as well as through private sales. |

11 March - 1 April: Capturing the Moment | Paintings by Ann Manly and Dennis Harrison
Dennis Harrison
Ann Manly and Dennis Harrison are exhibiting mainly new watercolours together with a few oil paintings by Ann. The inspiration for this exhibition lay in their travels in Venice, the Lot and Dordogne valleys in France, Greece (where the fascinating buildings demand to be painted), the Lake District, Suffolk, and the Cotswolds - all of which provide a wealth of subjects very suited to their style of painting. Their work is represented in many private collections throughout the world. They have exhibited in shows in London including exhibitions at the Royal Watercolour Society, the Mall Galleries and the "Venice in Peril" exhibition. John Ruskin, painting in Venice (already deteriorating in his time) said he was "endeavouring to trace the lines of this image before it be for ever lost." Ann and Dennis, painting the fast crumbling houses and palaces of Venice have tried here to follow in his footsteps. They start their pictures en plein air, wherever possible, to capture the moment when the sight of the subject compels them to paint it. The use of transparent paint in pure watercolour ensures the preservation of the translucence of the medium, a matter of great importance to them. The completion of the painting by the addition of details can then be carried out in their studio. Their work is represented in many private collections throughout the world. They have exhibited in shows in London including exhibitions at the Royal Watercolour Society, the Mall Galleries and the "Venice in Peril" exhibition.
18 Feb - 4 March: Natural Worlds | Works by Margaret Fitzpatrick & Gill Salway
Margaret Fitzpatrick has always been fascinated by the natural world. In her work she aims to introduce an element of design and to balance this with capturing the intricate and minute details of the plants with the botanical accuracy that is a familiar part of more traditional botanical illustration.
14 Jan - 5 Feb: Colour, Pattern, Rhythm | Works by Christine O'Sullivan, Jan Ritchie, John Stephens, Theresa Munby & Jane Sears
This exhibition will light up the dark days of January, with five artists united in their love of colour and pattern. Jan Ritchie's training as a textile designer invests her linocut prints of landscape subjects with a strongly decorative effect. John Stephens' bold treatment of still life motifs uses abstract pattern making to great effect, while in her paintings Christine O'Sullivan moves away completely from representation to a world of brilliant geometry. To complement what is on the walls, Theresa Munby's ceramics are composed of porcelain paper-clay which enables her to experiment freely, while potter Jane Sears transforms familiar domestic shapes with her use of underglaze decoration.
