Catherine Pumphrey

I originally come from a  music and language teaching background, but I've always drawn and painted. With my family flying the nest it's given me the opportunity to paint more in my summerhouse studio at home in Abingdon. 
I'm mostly self-taught, and over the years have experimented with ink-and- watercolour and soft pastels before discovering the richness and versatility of oils in still-life work. I’m also fascinated by portraiture, in pastels, oil and charcoal.
My most recent oil works are inspired by my garden, inherited treasures and jewel-like vases, giving them a stained glass quality. They explore the often unexpected and transitory colours found in nature. I strive to create joyful paintings, with a bright, varied palette and  deep contrasts of light and shadow.
