I came to crafting late after a full sporting life as a fencer representing both Great Britain and Australia as well as working in marketing, tourism and tertiary education.
I started idly doing very simple wood carving using the offcuts from the floor of the bellows maker’s shed. I then started to carve image outlines and fill the shapes with resin and sold my first piece at the Swire Art Prize Exhibition. I discovered a hollow log I thought it would be fun to build images in the empty space. The challenge was to work out how to turn a liquid into a solid layer on which to build in a space with no top or bottom! Once the first layer is set I can then build scenes and clocks layer by layer. More recently I have had fun building scenes using foraged bark. It still amazes me that I can generally see what I want to do the minute I look at a piece of wood! It is a slow process and challenging because there is no undoing mistakes but I love the mindfulness of creativity and the fact that others like my work enough to actually buy it!
