Susanne Heinrich
For about two decades Susanne was a full-time internationally-renowned musician, touring the
world with lots of lovely colleagues and doing more recordings than she can remember. For some time now she has been working in academic administration for the University of Oxford, lately for the Ruskin School of Art. Since her creative valve needs more release than the handful of concerts she still does every year, she makes things in her garden studio. Susanne mainly works with wool, using the ancient technique of wetfelting, using just water and soap, but also creates abstract landscapes using acrylic and reactive paints to create a seemingly random effect. As regards felting, the two main attractions for her are that no machines are needed and that the material is organic in more ways than one – it seems to have its own direction and will, as can be seen best in her lighting creations. The fibres' own direction and energy show up best when lit from one side and the effect of giving the material the space it needs to come alive within a given form can be quite magical.
